How to say “refused” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فَٱمْتَنَعَتْ مِّنِّي حَتَّى أَلَمَّتْ بِهَا سَنَةٌ مِنَ السِّنِينَ،
So she refused from me until a year of hardship befell her.
فَٱمْتَنَعَتْ — so she refused. A past-tense verb 'refused/held back' with a feminine 'she' ending, fronted by fa-. The fa- advances the narration, and the feminine ending agrees with the woman as the one who resisted.
