  So she began to say, "When will there be confirmation of what has come of the promise, O young man?"

  فَجَعَلَتْ — so she began. The fa- here is a consequence link, 'so', pivoting from the previous event into her reaction. The verb is a completed past act of beginning, and it belongs to a small set of 'set about doing' verbs that lead straight into another verb describing what she started.
