وَلِهَذَا كَانَ بِعَضِّ الشُّيُوخِ إِذَا أَمَرَ مُتَّبِعِيهِ بِالتَّوْبَةِ
For this reason, when some of the sheikhs would order their followers to repent,
الشُّيُوخِ — the sheikhs. A definite broken-plural noun 'the elders/sheikhs' in the genitive after the partitive phrase. Its 'the' marks the known group from which 'some' are drawn.
