وَلِهَذَا كَانَ بِعَضِّ الشُّيُوخِ إِذَا أَمَرَ مُتَّبِعِيهِ بِالتَّوْبَةِ
For this reason, when some of the sheikhs would order their followers to repent,
بِعَضِّ — some of. A preposition fused to a noun, used here to mean 'some of', putting the following noun in the genitive. It picks out a subset of the group named next.
