How to say “the firewood” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَكَانَا فِي السِّجْنِ مَعًا، فَمَنَعَهُمَا السِّجَّانُ مِنْ إِدْخَالِ الْحَطَبِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ بَارِدَةٍ،
They were together in prison, and the jailer prevented them from bringing in firewood on a cold night.
الْحَطَبِ — the firewood. This noun carries al- 'the' and is the thing acted upon by the verbal noun before it: what was being brought in. Because an action-noun governs its object much as a verb would, but pulls it into the genitive, this word wears the genitive ending. So 'the bringing-in of the firewood' is built as an action-noun plus its genitive object.
