Arabic vocabulary
How to say “the prison” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَكَانَا فِي السِّجْنِ مَعًا، فَمَنَعَهُمَا السِّجَّانُ مِنْ إِدْخَالِ الْحَطَبِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ بَارِدَةٍ،
They were together in prison, and the jailer prevented them from bringing in firewood on a cold night.
السِّجْنِ — the prison. This noun carries al- 'the', marking a specific known prison, and sits in the genitive because the 'in' before it governs it. The case ending here is forced by the preposition, not by any subject or object role. The definiteness points to the particular jail the story is set in.
