وَلِهَذَا قَالَ مَنْ قَالَ مِنَ السَّلَفِ كَسَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ
For this reason, those among the predecessors, such as Sa'id ibn Jubayr, said:
السَّلَفِ — the Salaf. A definite noun for the early generations, in the genitive after the partitive 'from'. It names the group the speakers are drawn from.

Ibn Abi al-Dunya reported from some of the predecessors that one devil met another.
السَّلَفِ — the predecessors. A definite noun in the genitive, the owner half of 'some of the predecessors', naming the early pious figures the report passes through. Its case is set by that owned role.
