فَنَهَاهُمْ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُجِيبُوهُ
Then the Prophet forbade them to answer him.
يُجِيبُوهُ — they answer him. A present-form verb pushed into its subjunctive shape by the 'that' before it (you can hear it in the trimmed ending), with a '-hu' tail attaching 'him' as the one answered. The subjunctive marks this as the aimed-at act that was banned, not something that happened.
