How to say “to be exalted” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
جل عن صاحبة وولد وكذب القس،
Exalted is He above having a wife and child, and the priest lied.
جَلَّ — he exalted. A past-tense verb with the doer 'He' built into its form, so no separate pronoun appears. The verb means to be exalted or far above, and the completed past states it as a settled truth, leading into what He is above.
From: God's Attributes →فَلَمْ يَزَلْ بِذَلِكَ حَتَّى قَتَلَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِبَدْرٍ
He continued like that until God, the Exalted and Glorious, killed him at Badr.
وَجَلَّ — and Glorious. The wa- here links this second praise word to the one before it, completing the set phrase 'Mighty and Majestic'. This is the simple joining wa- ('and') used to pair two items of equal weight; the whole couplet is an honorific aside about God, not a new clause.
From: Warning Before the Battle of Badr →مَا أَحَدٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ إِلَّا وَهُوَ أَحْمَقُ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ رَبِّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ،
There is no one among people who is not foolish regarding what lies between him and his Lord, the Exalted and Majestic.
وجل — and Majestic. This completes the fixed honorific, the 'and Majestic' half, joined by wa- to the previous word. As a frozen formula the pair is read as a whole. It closes the reverential phrase.
From: On Foolishness and Wisdom →وَقِيلَ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ الشَّيْطَانُ يَعِدُكُمْ الْفَقْرَ
And it was said concerning the words of God, Exalted and Majestic: Satan promises you poverty.
وَجَلَّ — Majestic. The wa- joins the second praise word, 'and is majestic', to the first, completing the paired honorific 'mighty and majestic'. As a fixed reverent pairing it sits parallel to the word before it and stays outside the main grammar of the sentence.
From: Charity and Stinginess →وَقِيلَ يَعِدُكُمْ الْفَقْرَ فِي الْبَذْلِ وَالْعَطَاءِ فِي مَرْضَاةِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ
And it was said, poverty leads you to spend and to give in seeking the pleasure of God, Glorified and Exalted.
وَجَلَّ — and Exalted. The second half of that set praise-formula, joined by a built-in 'and' to the first half. The two together are a single customary blessing, not a clause to parse word by word.
