Arabic vocabulary
How to say “a mother” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فَقَالَ إِنَّ لِيَّ أُمًّا بَلَغَ بِهَا الْكِبَرُ،
He said, "I have a mother who has reached old age,"
أمًا — a mother. This noun has no al- and carries an open tanwin ending, marking it as indefinite, 'a mother', while sitting in the object-like form the emphatic 'indeed' demands of the noun it grips. So its ending shows both indefiniteness and the particle's grip. It is the topic of the man's complaint.
