Arabic vocabulary
How to say “bed” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وَأمره أَن يُفَارق المضجع
And he was instructed to leave the bed.
الْمَضْجَعَ — the bed. The object of 'leave', accusative ('-a'), definite — his sleeping-place. What he is told to vacate.
From: The Night of the Migration →وقال ﴿تَتَجَافَى جُنُوبُهُمْ عَنِ الْمَضَاجِعِ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنْفِقُونَ﴾
And He said, 'Their sides shun their beds as they call upon their Lord in fear and hope, and from what We have provided them, they spend.'
الْمَضَاجِعِ — their beds. This noun carries 'the' and is governed by the preposition before it, taking the prepositional ending. It names the beds or resting places that are forsaken for night worship.
From: Prayer and Charity →وَأَبْدَى مَضْجَعٌ سِوَاكَ قِبَلَ المَمَّاتِ مَضْجَعُكَ،
And he revealed a resting place other than you before death revealed your resting place.
مَضْجَعٌ — a resting place. An indefinite noun, no 'the', marked with the buzzing ending. It names a place of lying down, here a grave, and stands as what was revealed. Its indefiniteness keeps it general, 'a resting place', some other person's, contrasted with 'yours' later in the line.
