How to say “besides” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
تقول لا إلهَ إلا الله فتقطعُ تبعيّةَ القلب لِما سوى الله، ثم تُترجمها فعلًا تُقدِّم أمرَه على رغبتك
You say: 'There is no god but Allah' and cut the heart's dependency on anything besides Allah, then translate it into action: you prioritize His command over your desire.
سِوَى — besides. 'other than', a noun-like 'besides' that heads an 'of' pairing with 'Allah'. Its long final vowel does not shift for case; it sets up 'anything apart from God'.
From: Remembrance That Reshapes the Heart →إذا ناظرتَهم لم تَلْق منهم سوى حَرْفَيْنِ لِمْ لِمْ لا نُسَلِّمْ
When you debate them, you find nothing from them but the two words, 'why, why, we do not concede.'
سِوَى — but. 'other than, anything but', head of an 'of' pairing with 'two words'; 'nothing except...'.
From: Avoiding Scholarly Disputation →لَا كَانَ من لسواك مِنْهُ قلبه
May there never be one whose heart is for anyone other than You...
لِسِوَاكَ — other than You. 'Li-' (for / to) fused with 'other-than' plus '-ka' (You) attached, genitive — 'for [anyone] other than You'. The 'li-' marks the wrong object of the heart.
From: Overcoming Desire →وَلَا مَنْفَعَةَ لَهُ فِي كِيسِهِ سِوَى مَقَالَةِ النَّاسِ لَهُ
and there is no benefit for him in his bag except the people’s remark:
سِوَى — except. An exception word, 'except', carving one item out of the sweeping negation just made. It forces the noun after it into the (genitive) form and signals that the single leftover is what follows.
From: Empty Fasting, Empty Prayer →فَكَذَلِكَ الَّذِي يَعْمَلُ لِلرِّيَاءِ وَالسُّمْعَةِ فَلَيْسَ لَهُ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ سِوَى مَقَالَةِ النَّاسِ،
Similarly, the one who works for showing off and seeking praise has nothing from his action but the people’s remarks,
سِوَى — except. An exception word, 'except', carving the one leftover out of the 'he has nothing'. It governs the noun after it into the (genitive) form and isolates what little remains.
From: Empty Fasting, Empty Prayer →وَغَضَّ الطَّرْفَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاهُمْ،
And lower your gaze from anyone except them.
سِوَاهُمْ — except them. This is the 'other than / except' word carrying -hum ('them'), so it means 'other than them'. It excludes everyone but the chosen companions from the gaze. The attached pronoun is the owned half of an 'of'-style pairing with this exception word, pinning the exclusion to that specific group.
From: Choosing Good Companions →وَأَبْدَى مَضْجَعٌ سِوَاكَ قِبَلَ المَمَّاتِ مَضْجَعُكَ،
And he revealed a resting place other than you before death revealed your resting place.
سِوَاكَ — other than you. A word meaning 'other than', with the suffix -ka ('you', male) attached, so it reads 'other than you'. It marks this resting place as someone else's, setting up the contrast with 'your own resting place' coming later in the sentence.
From: Vigilance Against Worldly Deception →فيقال يا محمد أدخل من أمتك من لا حساب عليهم من الباب الأيمن من أبواب الجنة وهم شركاء الناس فيما سوى ذلك من الأبواب
It will be said: "O Muhammad, admit into Paradise from your community those who will not be held accountable, through the right-hand gate of the gates of Paradise, and they will share with the people in what is beyond that from the other gates."
سِوَى — beyond that. A noun meaning 'other than/besides' that heads an 'of' link with the following 'that', forcing it into the governed form; it frames the remaining gates as everything apart from the named one. It sets the 'beyond that' contrast.
