Arabic vocabulary
How to say “but” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
ولكن تصده عن الحق شهوات النفس، ووساوس الشيطان، ومجالسة الأشرار، وطول الأمل، وحب الدنيا
But desires of the self, whispers of Satan, keeping company with the wicked, long hopes, and love of the world divert it from the truth.
وَلَكِنَّ — but rather. The wa- opens the sentence and the particle with it is the strong 'but', which contrasts what follows with the preceding statement and forces the noun after it into the object case. So whatever its sense-role, the next word it governs takes that object ending.
