Arabic vocabulary
How to say “compete” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فقال من طلب العلم ليجاري به العلماء، ويماري به السفهاء، ويصرف به وجوه الناس اليه أدخله الله النار
He said: 'Whoever seeks knowledge to compete with the scholars, or to argue with the foolish, or to turn people's faces towards him, Allah will admit him into the Fire.'
لِيُجَارِيَ — to compete with. Here 'li-' is the 'in order to' marker fused to a present-tense verb, and that marker pushes the verb into its subjunctive shape, which signals purpose. The change of the verb's ending is exactly how Arabic shows this is the aim of seeking, not something already done.
