How to say “eat” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
ثم قال لئن أنا حييت حتى آكل تمراتي هذه إنها لحياة طويلة
Then he said: 'If I live until I eat my dates, it will indeed be a long life!'
آكُلَ — I eat. The verb has shifted into its subjunctive shape, and the trigger is the 'until' just before it. After this particle Arabic drops the plain present ending and changes the vowel, which is how a listener knows the eating is the aim being worked toward, not something happening now.
