Arabic vocabulary
How to say “example” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
فمن كان خطؤه لتفريطه فيما يجب عليه من اتباع القرآن والإيمان مثلا،
Whoever errs due to negligence in following the Qur'an and faith, for example,
مَثَلًا — for example. 'for example, say', accusative adverb — 'by way of example'.
From: Judging by Revelation →وَقَدْ ضَرَبْتُ لِذَلِكَ مَثَلَيْنِ، فَلْيَكُونَا مِنْكَ عَلَى بَالٍ
I have already given two examples for that, so keep them in mind:
مَثَلَيْنِ — two examples. This noun is in the dual, Arabic's dedicated 'exactly two' form, so the count 'two' is folded into the word's ending rather than spoken as a separate number. It is the object of 'I struck', set in the object form. So one word says 'two examples' and marks them as what was given.
From: Choosing Good Companions →الْمَثَلُ الْأَوَّلُ رَجُلٌ خَرَجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ،
The first example: a man went out of his house to pray.
الْمَثَلُ — the example. A definite noun, 'the example', used here as the heading of the section that follows, like a title standing on its own. Its al- marks it as the specific example about to be told. It opens a label-then-explanation structure rather than a full sentence.
From: Choosing Good Companions →OpenArabic teaches words like مَثَلٌ through real bilingual reading with native audio and spaced-repetition practice.
