الْأَوَّلُ — the first. An ordinal 'first', describing the heading-noun before it and agreeing with it as a definite masculine singular. The shared al- on both words is what locks the adjective to its noun. Together they read 'the first example'.
From: Choosing Good Companions →وَمَثَلُ الأَوَّلِ كَرَجُلٍ صَارَعَ رَجُلًا شَدِيدًا فَلَا يُقْهَرُ إِلَّا بِتَعَبٍ وَمِشْقَةٍ

الأَوَّلِ — the first. The owner half of the 'of' pairing, in the genitive, giving 'of the first (case)'. Its case is forced by its role as the owned term after 'example'.
From: Staying Firm in Faith →وكذلك التشهد الأول، يجب مع الذكر عند مالك وأحمد،
Similarly, the first Tashahhud is obligatory with remembrance according to Malik and Ahmad.
الْأَوَّلُ — the first. This is an adjective agreeing with the noun before it in gender, definiteness and case, masculine, carrying its own 'the', and matching the subject in the nominative. So it reads 'the first one', specifying which testimony the ruling concerns.
