وَقَعَتْ — occurs. 'fell / occurred,' feminine to agree with its doer 'impurity' (which follows). Under 'when,' the past reads as a present case. Verb before subject, the verb shaped feminine for the noun to come.
From: The Practice of Earth Cleansing →وَوَقَعَتْ أَلْوِيِتُهُ وَأَعْلَامُهُ مِنْ أَيْدِيهِمْ فَلَيْسُوا يَرْفَعُونَهَا،
And his banners and standards fell from their hands, so they do not raise them.
وَوَقَعَتْ — and fell. The wa- prefix is the running 'and' that chains this clause onto the previous one; it does not change the verb. The verb itself is past tense and carries a feminine -at ending because its subject, the banners that come next, is treated as a feminine plural in Arabic. So the verb is quietly agreeing with a subject that has not been spoken yet.
