Arabic vocabulary
How to say “his companion” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
ثُمَّ قَالَ لِيَنْظُرَ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنْ جَلِيسِهِ
Then he said, "Let every man look at his companion."
جَلِيسِهِ — his companion. This noun carries an owner-ending meaning 'his', so one word equals 'his companion', and it takes the genitive forced by the preposition before it. The attached possessor points back to the 'each man' just mentioned. Arabic glues the owner onto the noun rather than using a separate word.
