الْمعرفَة بِسَاط لَا يطَأ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا مقرب
Knowledge is a carpet stepped on only by those close to it.
المَعْرِفَةُ — the knowledge. A verbal noun 'gnosis / deep knowing', the topic, nominative, definite — experiential knowledge of God. The 'al-' marks it as the thing being defined.
From: Love and Devotion to God →ويستدعي معرفة حسنة بالتفسير وإكثارا من حكايات الفقراء والزهاد
It requires good understanding of interpretation and an abundance of stories about the poor and ascetics.
مَعْرِفَةً — understanding. This is the object of 'demands', sitting in the accusative as the thing required. It is a verbal noun meaning 'knowing/acquaintance', so the sentence asks for the act of knowing itself, turned into a thing one can possess. The accusative ending marks its object role.
From: Sincere Preaching →فهذه قواطع تحول بين القلب وبين معرفته
These obstacles stand between the heart and its understanding.
مَعْرِفَتِهِ — its understanding. The object of the second 'between', so it stands in the possessive case, a verbal noun meaning 'knowing' with -hu 'its' attached, 'its knowing'. The noun and 'its' form an 'of' link; 'its' points back to the heart, naming the understanding the obstacles block it from.
From: A Sound Heart Knows →فَإِنْ كَانَ لَهُ مَعْرِفَةٌ وَعِلْمٌ زَادَ فِي السَّعْيِ وَالْجَمْزِ بِقَدْرِ التِّفَاتِهِ أَوْ أَكْثَرَ،
If he has familiarity and knowledge, he increases his effort and steadfastness in proportion to how often he turns to him, or even more.
مَعْرِفَةٌ — familiarity. An indefinite noun 'acquaintance/familiarity', which is the thing possessed and so the subject of the having-frame, carrying the plain subject ending. Being indefinite it presents the familiarity as some, unquantified. A second possessed noun is joined to it next.
