How to say “martyr” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
فإن هؤلاء الثلاثة الذين يريدون الرياء والسمعة هم بإزاء الثلاثة الذين بعد النبيين من الصديقين والشهداء والصالحين،
For these three who seek show and reputation are the counterparts of the three who come after the prophets: the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous.
وَالشُّهَدَاءِ — the martyrs. 'And' plus a broken plural in the genitive, the second rank — those slain in God's cause. It is parallel to the sincere ones in the list.
From: Deeds for God Alone →ومن قاتل لتكون كلمة الله هي العليا وقتل كان شهيدا،
And whoever fights so that the word of God is supreme and is killed is a martyr,
شَهِيدًا — a martyr. Predicate of 'was', accusative (the tanwin) as this 'to be' governs, indefinite — 'a witness / martyr'. The accusative ending marks what he thereby became.
From: Deeds for God Alone →ويعطيهم منازل الشهداء
...and grants them the ranks of martyrs.
الشُّهَدَاءِ — of the martyrs. This is the owner in the 'ranks of the martyrs' pairing, and its genitive ending is what signals that it possesses the noun before it. Its own 'al-' makes it definite, and that definiteness passes back to the ranks, so the whole phrase reads as specific.
