I said: The scholars and the men of distinction have always liked wit.
والأفاضل — and the men of distinction. Front wa- is the joiner 'and', pairing this group with the scholars as a second subject. The al- makes it definite, 'the' distinguished ones, so the two definite plurals together form the joint doer of the verb.
