خَصْمِهِ — his opponent. His adversary in debate, owned by him, in the -i form after 'over.' The sentence ends with the verdict on this type: his interpreting is point-scoring against a rival, not a search for the verse's meaning.

خُصُومِهِ — his opponents. This noun, his opponents, is in the genitive after the viewpoint preposition, with the possessor attached pointing back to the scholar. The suffix tracks whose opponents these are, framing the judgment as theirs.
