How to say “paternal uncle” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَقَالَ الآخَرُ اللَّهُمَّ كَانَتْ لِيَّ بِنْتُ عَمٍّ كَانَتْ أَحْبَّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ،
And the other said, "O Allah, I had a paternal cousin; she was the dearest of people to me."
عَمٍّ — paternal uncle. A kinship noun completing the 'daughter of' pairing as its owner, in the genitive after it. Set directly with no separate 'of', it carries the possessed-side ending, so together the two name a paternal cousin.
