How to say “another” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وَتَرَكَ البَعْضُ الآخَرُ الْكِتَابَةَ لِدِقَّةِ تَثَبُّتِهِ وَقُوَّةِ حِفْظِهِ
Others abandoned writing because what they retained was precise and their memory was strong.
الآخَرُ — the other. An adjective 'the other', describing 'some' and turning it into 'the other group'. It agrees with its noun in being definite ('al-'), the way Arabic adjectives copy their noun's definiteness as well as its gender and case.
From: How the Companions Preserved Hadith →وَقَالَ الآخَرُ اللَّهُمَّ كَانَتْ لِيَّ بِنْتُ عَمٍّ كَانَتْ أَحْبَّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ،
And the other said, "O Allah, I had a paternal cousin; she was the dearest of people to me."
الآخَرُ — the other. A noun made definite by the prefixed 'the', standing as the subject of the 'said' verb. The 'the' singles him out as 'the other one' set against the man who spoke before, marking a known contrast.
From: Trapped and Delivered →وَالْحِزْبُ الْآخَرُ أُمُّ سَلَمَةُ وَسَائِرُ نِسَاءِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ،
And the other group was Umm Salama and the remaining wives of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
الْآخَرُ — the other. A describing word carrying 'the', placed after the group to mark it as the OTHER one of the two; it matches the noun in definiteness and so reads as its attribute. Sharing the article, it pins down which group is meant rather than starting a new idea.
From: Wives of the Prophet →ثُمَّ الْعِشْقُ وَآخَرُهَا التَّتِيمُ
Then comes ardent love, and its final stage is utter enthrallment.
وآخَرُهَا — and its last one. Three pieces are fused into one word: the linking wa-, the noun for the final stage, and a tail pronoun -ha pointing back to the love just named. That tail builds a possessive link, 'its last stage', tying this clause to the earlier noun so the whole list reads as stages of one thing.
From: Faith and Worship →وآخر منهم إن حضر في ختمة أو تلا في محراب جعل ديدنه إحضار غرائب الوجوه والسكت،
Another of them, when present at a completion or when reciting in the prayer niche, made it his habit to produce strange facial expressions and to remain silent.
وَآخَرُ — and another. The connector wa- 'and' opens a new subject, while the noun itself means 'another (one)' from a set. It launches a fresh portrait by pairing this person against others previously described. As a noun of the 'other' type it is inherently comparative, pointing to one more member of the group being criticized.
