Arabic vocabulary
How to say “quicken” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَعَنْ الأَصْمَعِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الرَّشِيدَ يَقُولُ النَّوَادِرُ تَشْحَذُ الأَذْهَانَ وَتَفْتُقُ الآذَانَ
And from al-Asma'i: I heard al-Rashid say, "Anecdotes sharpen minds and quicken ears."
وَتَفْتُقُ — and quicken. Front wa- is the joiner 'and'; the verb is present tense in the feminine-singular shape that Arabic pairs with the non-human plural 'anecdotes'. So the wa- links a second action to the first, both verbs agreeing with the inanimate plural subject.
