Arabic vocabulary
How to say “the ears” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَعَنْ الأَصْمَعِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الرَّشِيدَ يَقُولُ النَّوَادِرُ تَشْحَذُ الأَذْهَانَ وَتَفْتُقُ الآذَانَ
And from al-Asma'i: I heard al-Rashid say, "Anecdotes sharpen minds and quicken ears."
الآذَانَ — the ears. The al- makes this plural definite, 'the' ears, the known whole, used here for listeners' attention. It is the receiver-of-the-action of 'quicken', so it wears the accusative object ending, marking it as what gets opened up.
