  He drank all the water that was in the river, or he redeemed himself from it.

  افتدي — he redeemed himself. A past-tense verb with the 'he' subject built in, naming the second of the two options. The reflexive sense, redeeming or ransoming himself, lives in the verb's pattern rather than in any separate pronoun. It balances the verb 'drank' across the 'or'.
