Arabic vocabulary
يمتنع is how you say “refrain” in Arabic. Hear it pronounced and see it used in a real example sentence from classical texts below.
وإذا كانوا يقولون الوقت الحاضر والساعة الراهنة وإن لم يفعلا ذلك فكيف يمتنع أن يقولوا ماء دافق وعيشة راضية
And if they say 'the present time' and 'the current hour' without those phrases acting, how could they refrain from saying 'gushing water' and 'contented life'?
يَمْتَنِعُونَ — they refrain. A present-tense verb 'they refrain', carrying its plural 'they' subject in the -una ending. Under the rhetorical 'how', it questions and effectively denies that they would hold back; the plural ending marks the group.
