How to say “regret” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
بل هو وبال على صاحبه وخزي وحسرة وندامة
Rather, it is a burden on the owner and a disgrace, regret, and remorse.
وَحَسْرَةٌ — and regret. Joined by 'and', a third predicate noun in the same chain, naming bitter regret. Its bare indefinite ending matches its partners as another thing the misused knowledge turns into.
From: Knowledge and Humility →فَيَرْجِعُونَ بِحَسْرَةٍ وَنَدَامَةٍ مَا رَجَعَ الْأَوَّلُونَ وَالْآخِرُونَ بِمِثْلِهَا
They will return with a regret and remorse the likes of which none of the first or last have ever experienced.
بِحَسْرَةٍ — with regret. A preposition 'with / in' fused to an indefinite noun 'grief', the preposition forcing its ending. It marks the state they carry as they return, linking the returning to the feeling that accompanies it.
From: Turned Away at the Gate →وإن شردت وركبت الإعراض والكسل مثلي ، فواحسرتا علي وعليك
And if you stray and embrace neglect and laziness like me, then alas for both you and me,
فَوَاحَسْرَتَا — then oh our regret. This is the bound fa- 'then' plus the lament-particle wa plus a noun of grief in a special calling shape, 'then alas, oh my sorrow'. The fa- ties the outcry to the prior conditions, and the wa here is the 'oh' of grief, not 'and'; the whole forms a fixed exclamation of regret.
From: True Devotion →فَيَا شِدَّةَ الْحَسْرَةِ عِنْدَمَا يُعَايِنُ الْمُبْطِلُ سَعْيَهُ وَكَدَّهُ هَبَاءً مَنْثُورًا،
O, what intense regret when the one whose efforts are nullified witnesses his striving and his toil scattered like dust.
الْحَسْرَةِ — regret. A definite noun completing the 'of' pair, 'the intensity of the regret', and genitive as the owner. The side-by-side nouns carry the possession with no 'of'; together they form the single thing the exclamation marvels at, the sheer depth of the remorse.
