وَأَنْكَرَ الشَّيْخُ وَصِدْقِ وَبِرٍّ،
The sheikh denied it, and he was truthful and pious.
وَبِرٍّ — and piety. This joins a linking 'and' to a noun 'piety/righteousness', coordinated with 'truthfulness' as a parallel quality of the sheikh. The 'and' yokes the two virtues together, both in the same descriptive role.

And indeed, the two men are not equal in deeds of righteousness,
الْبِرِّ — righteousness. This is the possessed half of 'deeds of righteousness', so it takes the (genitive) and its al- supplies the definiteness for the whole pairing. The two nouns side by side build 'deeds of righteousness' with no separate 'of'. It specifies what kind of deeds are meant.
