Arabic vocabulary
How to say “satisfactory” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
وأما العيشة الراضية فالوصف بها أحسن من الوصف بالمرضية
As for the 'contented life,' describing it this way is better than describing it as 'a life one is pleased with.'
بِالْمُرْضِيَةِ — as satisfactory. A preposition bi- fused onto a passive participle made definite by al-, 'with the pleased-with one'. The bi- marks the means and forces the genitive; the maf'ul-pattern participle names the life as 'that which is pleased-with', the weaker wording being contrasted.
From: Creating Life from Nothing →كأنها رضيت بهم ورضوا بها وهذا أبلغ من مجرد كونها مرضية فقط
As if it pleased them and they were pleased with it, and this is more expressive than merely being satisfactory.
مُرْضِيَةً — satisfactory. A passive participle in the object-style ending, the predicate inside the 'being' phrase: 'its merely being satisfactory'. The maf'ul-pattern participle names 'that which is pleased-with'; its accusative-style ending marks it as the predicate of the embedded being-clause.
