Arabic vocabulary
How to say “set out” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول انطلق ثلاثة نفر ممن كان قبلكم حتى آواهم المبيت إلى غار فدخلوه،
I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, say: 'Three men from those before you set out, and night forced them to take shelter in a cave. They entered it.'
انْطَلَقَ — he set out. This is a past-tense verb that opens the quoted story; the doer is named right after it, since Arabic normally puts the verb before its subject. It sets the whole tale in completed past time as the men begin their journey.
