  And their saying: 'A snake gives birth only to a snake' is mentioned in His saying: 'And they will not give birth except to a disobedient, disbeliever.'

  الْحَيَّةُ — a snake. This is 'the snake', definite with 'al-', the subject of 'gives birth', placed after its verb in the nominative as the doer. The feminine of the verb agrees with it. It names the creature the proverb speaks of.
