• وَقَوْلُهُمْ لَا تَلِدُ الْحَيَّةُ إِلَّا حَيَّةً، مَذْكُورٌ فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى وَلَا يَلِدُوا إِلَّا فَاجِرًا كَفَّارًا

  And their saying: 'A snake gives birth only to a snake' is mentioned in His saying: 'And they will not give birth except to a disobedient, disbeliever.'

  فَاجِرًا — a disobedient. This is 'a wicked one, a sinner', indefinite, the thing excepted, what they would beget. After this kind of exception it takes the accusative ending. It is the first of two descriptions of that offspring.
