How to say “the jailer / gaoler” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَحَكَى غَيْرُ الْمَأْمُونِ أَنَّ السَّجَّانُ فَطِنَ لِإِرْتِفَاقِهِ بِالْمِصْبَاحِ فِي تَسْخِينِ الْمَاءِ،
And another narrator, not al-Ma'mun, reported that the jailer noticed his staying close by the lamp in heating the water.
السَّجَّانُ — the jailer. This is the doer of the noticing, an agent-noun meaning 'the jailer' with al- attached. Though it is the subject of its clause, after the 'that' particle it should sit in the object-like form, a point the source's vowelling here does not fully reflect. Either way it names who became aware of al-Fadl's trick.
