How to say “the lamp” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَحَكَى غَيْرُ الْمَأْمُونِ أَنَّ السَّجَّانُ فَطِنَ لِإِرْتِفَاقِهِ بِالْمِصْبَاحِ فِي تَسْخِينِ الْمَاءِ،
And another narrator, not al-Ma'mun, reported that the jailer noticed his staying close by the lamp in heating the water.
بِالْمِصْبَاحِ — by the lamp. The bi- here means 'by / using', naming the means, and it fuses with a noun carrying al- 'the'. The preposition forces that noun into the genitive form. It specifies what al-Fadl was making use of: the lamp.
