الْعَبْدِ — the person. This noun carries al- 'the', here used generically for any human, and sits in the genitive because the 'upon' before it governs it. The definiteness here works in a class-wide way, 'the human being' in general, not one person. Its case ending is set by the preposition.
From: Honoring Parents →
And it is a contention, and the heart of the servant is what stirs up this war.
الْعَبْدَ — the servant. A definite noun ('the servant') owned by 'heart' before it, closing the 'of' pairing as 'the heart of the servant'. As the owner term it takes the genitive ending. It names the person whose heart stirs the inner war.
From: Patience and the Human Self →
Rather, God must be more beloved to the servant than anything else.
العبْد — the servant. The al- makes this the representative 'servant', and governed by the preceding 'to', it sits in the genitive. It names the one to whom God must be most beloved, the experiencer of the comparison set up by the previous preposition.
From: Faith and Worship →
It is more fitting that God's forgiveness have the power to cleanse the servant of sin.
العَبْد — the servant. Definite by 'al-' and serving as the OBJECT of the action-noun 'purifying' (the one cleansed). The verbal noun governs it as a verb would, so it sits in the object ending though no finite verb is present.
