He stipulated that he would receive from the rich one of three things: a necklace, a crown, or a bracelet of gold.
أَشْيَاءَ — things. This is the owner in 'three of things', a plural noun in the genitive to complete the counting phrase. It names the category from which one item is chosen.

He placed four things in his heart.
أَشْيَاءَ — things. The counted noun ('things') after the numeral 'four', kept PLURAL and pulled into the genitive shape because the three-to-ten numerals govern their count that way. It names what the four deposited items are.
