وَقَوْلُهُمْ الْحِمْيَةُ رَأْسُ الدَّوَاءِ، مَذْكُورٌ فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا
And their saying: 'Moderation is the best remedy' is mentioned in His saying: 'And eat and drink, but be not excessive.'
تُسْرِفُوا — be excessive. This is a plural verb 'be excessive (you all)', in the clipped jussive shape because the prohibition word 'do not' before it demands that form. The shortened ending is the grammatical sign of a prohibition. So it means 'do not overdo it', addressed to the group.
From: When Scripture Answers Proverbs →فقال تعالى وكلوا واشربوا ولا تسرفوا
He said, 'And eat and drink, but do not be excessive.'
تُسْرِفُوا — be excessive.'. This verb is in the command-related jussive form demanded by the forbidding 'la' before it, which shortens its ending, so it means 'do not be wasteful'. The plural ending addresses the group; the prohibition caps the two permissions.
