إن أول الناس يقضى يوم القيامة عليه رجل اسُتشهد، فأتي به، فعرفه نعمته، فعرفها، قال فما عملت فيها؟
Indeed, the first of the people to be judged on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who was martyred. He will be brought, and Allah will make him recognize His blessings, and he will recognize them, and He will say: 'What did you do with them?'
اسْتُشْهِدَ — was martyred. This is a passive-shaped past verb: the man was made a martyr, the receiver of the action, with no killer named. Arabic marks the passive by the verb's inner vowels, so the form tells us he underwent martyrdom rather than caused it.

He will say: 'I fought for You until I was martyred.' He will say: 'You lie. You fought so that it would be said you are brave; and so it was said.' Then it will be commanded that he be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire.
