وَالِابْتِلَاءُ — and the trial. wa- = 'and'; al- = 'the'; ibtila means 'trial, testing' — the subject of the phrase.

Indeed, Allah the Exalted created the creation to worship Him, and made the world a place of trial and test.
ابْتِلَاءٍ — trial. The owner closing 'a place of trial', set right after the head-noun and so taking the genitive ending. Being indefinite, it leaves the whole pairing indefinite, 'a place of some trial'.
