Arabic vocabulary
How to say “wake up” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
لا يتأدبون بآداب الحديث، ولا يستفيقون من سكرة السماع
They do not observe the etiquettes of the Hadith, nor do they awaken from the intoxication of listening.
يَسْتَفِيقُونَ — they awaken. A present-tense verb in the seeking/striving pattern meaning 'come to one's senses/sober up', with a built-in third-person plural 'they'. It is the verb negated by the preceding 'nor', giving 'nor do they sober up'. The pattern adds an 'actively try to' nuance, and the plural ending carries the subject.
