  The Prophet prayed for him, and he was saved.

  فَنَجَا — so he was saved. The fa- gives the result of the prayer, 'and so'; the verb is a past of deliverance with a hidden 'he' in its ending. The rescued man is understood from the story, not re-named.

  وَنَجَا — and he escaped. The connector wa- ('and') fused to a past-tense verb ('escaped'). The verb carries its own 'he' subject internally, so no separate word for 'he' is needed, and the wa- ties this outcome onto the previous result clause as a parallel benefit.
