  If those who set out to refute the philosophers were confused and affected by gloom,

  وَلَحِقَتْهُمْ — and affected them. The verb 'overtook / befell' wears a feminine ending here because its doer, the 'gloom' coming next, is a feminine noun — the verb agrees back with it even though that subject arrives afterward. The attached '-hum' is the object, 'them', the people overtaken.

• ثُمَّ لَحِقَ الْنَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ بِغَارٍ

  Then the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and Abu Bakr took shelter in a cave.

  لَحِقَ — took shelter in. A past verb with 'he' inside it, opening the new stage; here it means took to / reached (a refuge). Arabic sets it before its compound subject, so it stands complete before 'the Prophet ... and Abu Bakr' are named, the two together being who took shelter.
