Arabic vocabulary
How to say “gloom” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
اذا كان الذين قد انتدبوا للرد على الفلاسفة قد حاروا ولحقتهم كسفة،
If those who set out to refute the philosophers were confused and affected by gloom,
كَسْفَةٌ — gloom. This feminine noun is the actual doer of 'befell', which is why that verb showed up with its feminine mark. Word order in Arabic often puts the verb first and its subject second, so the thing that does the action can land after the verb, as it does here.
