How to say “undertake” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
اذا كان الذين قد انتدبوا للرد على الفلاسفة قد حاروا ولحقتهم كسفة،
If those who set out to refute the philosophers were confused and affected by gloom,
انْتَدَبُوا — set out. This is a derived (Form VIII) verb whose pattern carries a sense of volunteering or taking on a task. The '-u' tail packs in the doers, 'they', so no separate word for the subject is needed. The built-in vowels-and-letters mold is what gives it the 'set themselves to' flavor.
