How to say “philosophers” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
اذا كان الذين قد انتدبوا للرد على الفلاسفة قد حاروا ولحقتهم كسفة،
If those who set out to refute the philosophers were confused and affected by gloom,
الْفَلَاسِفَةِ — the philosophers. This is the target of the refutation, in the genitive because the preposition before it demands that case. The word is a broken plural — Arabic reshapes the singular internally to make it plural rather than just adding an ending, which is why it looks quite different from its singular.
