Yet it bears a weak possibility of agreeing with his school of thought.
وَيَحْتَمِلُ — and it bears. 'and it admits [of]' — a verb meaning to leave room for a possibility. Its hidden subject is the verse; it sets up that the verse could, faintly, be read his way — measured by the noun next.

He thinks well of his opponent, interpreting his words in the best possible light as long as they can bear it, and distinguishes between refuting the statement and insulting the speaker.
يَحْتَمِلُ — they can bear it. A Form VIII verb, 'admits / can bear [a sense],' with a hidden subject 'it' (the wording). The condition: so long as the words CAN plausibly carry the good reading. Past that, charity has its limit.
