أفضل كلمة قَالَهَا الشَّاعِر كلمة لبيد أَلا كل شَيْء مَا خلا الله بَاطِل
"The best phrase the poet Labid said: 'Indeed, everything besides Allah is false.'"
أَفْضَلُ — The best. 'the best, most excellent', the elative ('most-X'), nominative as the subject, head of an 'of' pairing with 'word' — 'the best OF a word'.

أَفْضَلُ — is better. 'is better, more excellent', nominative predicate of the long 'what...' subject; the elative ('more-X'), 'more excellent than...'.

He thinks well of his opponent, interpreting his words in the best possible light as long as they can bear it, and distinguishes between refuting the statement and insulting the speaker.
أَفْضَلِ — the best. An elative, 'the best,' in the -i form after 'on,' heading an 'of' pair with 'its bearings.' He picks the BEST of the possible readings — the most charitable sense the words can carry.

أَفْضَلِ — best. This is a fixed comparative, 'most excellent', that does not change for who or how many, and it is held in the governed form by the preceding 'to'. It heads an 'of' pairing, 'the highest of rank'.
